Garrett Reil
Garrett is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the International Society of Typographic Designers. He is a graduate of Limerick School of Art and Design and the National College of Art & Design (MA).
He has worked in London and Dublin with leading international design consultancies. He founded Rain design partners in 1998 with Clíona Geary.
Recently, he designed a brand identity and website for the new Wexford Opera House, an information campaign for RTÉ, and launched the Irish premiere of Cancer Tales.
His work on road sign design has been recognised by the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI) and will be exhibited at the forthcoming Best of Young Irish Design exhibition (Masters section) at the Crafts Council Gallery in Killkenny, 31 October 2009 – 31 January 2010. Last year, Garrett was commissioned by Conradh na Gaeilge to write a report to government, Comharthaí bóthair dátheangacha na hÉireann: Tuairisc agus moltaí – Ireland's Dual-language Road Signs: report and recommendations.
Interest in signs and typography
Garrett designed the size-specific New Johnston Book typeface for London Transport with Colin Banks and John Miles at Banks & Miles London; he co-designed signing manuals for Bass Plc and created a number of their retail brands; with Landor Associates he led the implementation of a new identity for Delta Air Lines.
Garrett lives in the picturesque twin towns of Ballina-Killaloe and does much of his work in Dublin and around Ireland, so he’s more intimately familiar with our roads and signs than he’d perhaps wish.
